INTRODUCING: Flash Fiction Fridays!

Greetings, Smutketeers!
I made you  a promise several months ago to finish a little alternate universe story featuring Caleb and Livvie in a 'body swap' situation. I never finished it because I was working on the rewrite of DETERMINED TO OBEY so it didn't make it into the bonus material for DARK DUET | PLATINUM EDITION.

Instead, I've decided to write it a little at a time, for free, every Friday. Here's how it works:

1. I post what I've written.
2. You leave a comment requesting what you'd like to happen next.
3. If your comment has the most supporters, I will take your suggestion and write a minimum of 500 words to post on the following #FFF
4. Repeat until the story is finished.

Since I've already started the story. Go, read, and let's get those suggestions going for this Friday. <3

Whispers in the Dark
by CJ Roberts

A/N: This is strictly AU and not 'part of the series', but enjoy it nonetheless. Also, this is unedited, so please forgive my errors. ;)

Caleb smiled as consciousness crept over him slowly. Livvie was pressed against his back, naked and warm, her deep breaths in his ear. She’d never spooned him before. The feeling was alien, but kind of nice. He shifted a bit and was surprised to find Livvie’s body covered him from head to toe. There was something odd about that, he thought. Wait. There was something really odd about that.

No more creeping; consciousness slammed into him and his adrenaline spiked. He sat up in bed and threw the covers off of them. Tits! He had fucking tits! He looked beside him and screamed a girly scream as he encountered his own body lying in the bed next to him.
His body opened its eyes in panic and sat up, staring at him in horror as they both screamed into one another’s faces. Caleb continued to scream as he watched his body faint and collapse onto the mattress.

Caleb scrambled out of bed on shorter legs than he was accustomed and raced into the bathroom to look at his reflection in the mirror. Livvie’s terrified eyes stared back at him in the mirror. “What the fuck?” Caleb whispered in Livvie’s voice. With trembling hands, he touched his breasts and encountered his pebbled nipples. He gasped. “No, no, no, no, no.” Continuing his exploration, he brushed his polished fingernails down his soft brown stomach and reached into his lace panties. His palm curled over his pussy. He stared at himself in the mirror, still unable to process what was happening and yet aware that it most certainly was happening – he’d switched bodies with Livvie.

Licking familiar lips in an unfamiliar way, he steeled himself for what he had to do next. His head poked out of the bathroom slowly and he let himself look at his body, the body he wasn’t fucking inhabiting, on the bed. Livvie was in there, probably just as terrified as he was. Regardless of his new tits and pussy, he was still a man, and his job was still to protect Livvie no matter what.
He…she…whatever, took hesitant steps toward the bed and gently sat next to…Livvie. “Livvie,” he whispered and carefully nudged her/his shoulder. “Please, Livvie, wake up. This shit is too weird to go through alone.” Livvie groaned deep in her throat and it came out sounding gruff, threatening, and distinctly male. It freaked Caleb the hell out, but he ignored his fear in a way he’d perfected over the course of his life.

Livvie’s eyelids began to flutter. She could hear a feminine voice coaxing her toward waking. Claudia? I don’t remember her staying the night. Livvie stretched and her limbs felt as though they went on forever. “Mmm,” she moaned. She felt…a little aroused…but in a way she’d never felt before; it throbbed instead of tingled and the location was a little different; lower belly instead of between her legs.

“Please don’t freak out again, Livvie. I need your help to figure this out.”

“Mmhmm,” Livvie sighed. She was really trying to get up but couldn’t quite manage it.

“Livvie! You’re in my fucking body. Wake up!” A panicked voice said and broke through Livvie’s fog. Her thoughts organized themselves in rapid fire. She’d woken up and come face to face with herself, but not herself, someone else in her body. She’d fainted.

Livvie shot up in bed, panting, and came face to face with herself again. Full of instincts she didn’t know she possessed, she tackled her doppelganger and pinned her—it—to the bed. “Who the fuck are you and why do you look like me?” Livvie paused at the sound of her voice and took notice of her long, pale, and muscled arms. She gasped and scrambled away from the body beneath her, knocking everything off the nightstand in the process.  She stared at the person struggling to sit up on the bed.

“Livvie,” her doppelganger whimpered. “I know! But please, calm down.” She sat up, sniffled, and wiped tears from her eyes. “Fuck. I never realized how strong I am. Do me a favor and watch your…my…strength. That really hurt.”

“What the hell is going on?” Livvie said. “Why do I sound like a man?” She stretched her arms out in front of her and recognized Caleb’s arms.  She ran her hands over her chest and noticed a distinct lack of breasts and the presence of hard muscle. She locked eyes with her doppelganger and slowly reached farther down for her…Oh my god, I have a dick. Caleb’s dick! “C-Caleb? Baby? Are you in there?”

‘Caleb’ nodded. “Yeah, I’m in here. Please come here and let me hold you.”

Livvie nodded. She could really use a hug right now. Closing the distance between them, she awkwardly arranged her masculine limbs so that Caleb could wrap his feminine arms around her and rock them. “Caleb, how did this happen? How do we make it stop?”

“I don’t know, Kitten. We’ll figure it out though, I promise. We just have to think logically about this, retrace out steps. For all we know, all we have to do is go back to sleep and wake up in our own bodies.” He kissed Livvie’s stubbled cheek. This is too weird.

“Caleb, for all we know this is permanent! Oh, God! What if it’s permanent?” She began to hyperventilate.

Caleb rocked back and forth with more force. “Shhh, Kitten. Don’t panic, you’ll faint again, and you’re way too heavy for me to lift in this condition.” He forced a laugh. “Why didn’t you ever tell me I’m so heavy?” Livvie started crying. “Shit. Come on, Kitten. You’re going to ruin my reputation if you keep crying like that,” he said, only half joking.
“You were crying!” She accused in Caleb’s voice but with her own whiny intonation.

“I was not! That was like, one tear, and I’m sure it was on account of your girl hormones reacting to being hit by a fucking wall of solid muscle. Seriously, your body—my body—is a trained killing machine. You have to specifically try not to hurt me until we get this figured out.”

“Stop trying to make me laugh. This is serious, Caleb.” Livvie drew her limbs in as tightly as possible to surround herself in Caleb’s comforting embrace, but her new body wouldn’t allow for much.

“I know it’s serious, Livvie. I also know that sitting around crying and wondering what the hell is going on has never helped anyone. We’ve been through more serious tragedies. We’ll get through this too.” Caleb stroked Livvie’s hair in the way he enjoyed. He didn’t enjoy having a man in his lap, even if the body belonged to him; it was too reminiscent of a past long buried and dead. He held onto his wits for Livvie’s sake.

Silence stretched out between them for several minutes. “I’m sorry, “ Livvie whispered calmly.

“I understand,” he replied honestly.

“Do you really think it could be as simple as going back to sleep and waking up?” Livvie wasn’t confident in the solution, but then again, waking up in your boyfriend’s body wasn’t exactly a thing you could Google.

Caleb’s heart began a wild beat. The most logical solution would be to do everything exactly as they had done the day before in the hopes of replicating and therefore reversing whatever had happened. His problem stemmed from the knowledge that he’d have to let Livvie fuck him, a thought that twisted his insides if he contemplated it too long. He cleared his throat. “We can try it. If it doesn’t work…” He licked his soft, girl lips nervously. “We’ll try something else.”

“What do we do in the meantime? I obviously can’t go to work like this and I definitely don’t want you wandering around in my body.”

His interest was piqued. “What are you afraid I’ll discover? I have half a mind to visit with all your male co-workers you seem too fond of.”

Livvie sat up and glared at Caleb. “You wouldn’t dare!” Caleb smirked and raised a brow. It was disconcerting to see her own face mimicking an expression she’d seen thousands of times on Caleb’s. Like staring into a mirror while it does something you’re not.

"I would dare a lot of things, Livvie." He smiled.

Livvie grinned like the Cheshire cat. "Oh, but baby...you're forgetting about all the new things I can do in this body." She reached up and placed a firm grip on Caleb's shoulder. She shivered when she detected fear in Caleb's eyes. She felt powerful in a way she never had before, like she'd woken up with superpowers. Heat pooled in her stomach and a heavy weight began to take shape. She glanced down her body and gasped through a wide smile. Her first hard-on was glorious! Her eyes cut back to Caleb.

His eyes were wide. "You—” he cleared his throat and swallowed, “You wouldn’t fucking dare.”

“Oh, Caleb. I would dare a lot of things.”

DARK DUET: Platinum Edition Countdown - 25 October

Today is October 25th
until

While we're waiting...
Here's a little taste from:
Determined to Obey

1. Kid
He’s alone, absolutely alone…lost! He’s never been lost. He’s never wondered if he’ll ever see his family again. Kid is eight years old; he’s terrified for the first time in his life.  His eyes look everywhere at once, but he can’t see her. She should be there—on the bench—waiting. He wasn’t gone very long, he thinks, but can’t be sure. How big is the park? Where is she? Where is his mama? His tongue darts out across his upper lip: Salt. Dust. Desperation. He cries out, sudden and fierce, “Mama!”

No answer.

An old man turns to look at him, and every warning he’s ever been given about strangers—strange men especially—sings through his blood. Kid has been told how beautiful he is, warned he’s a temptation, and been given the talk about people who like to touch underwear parts. So when the old man takes a step toward him, Kid runs.

He runs, but has no idea where he wants to go. He just has to keep moving, searching, calling out—whatever it takes to find her. If he stops moving, he’ll fall down and start crying. His dad says there’s never been a problem solved by crying.

He thinks about going back to the skate ramp to see if the boys he met left, but he knows they did. He only came back because they were leaving. He can’t remember where his mom parked the car. What if it’s gone? He brushes the thought away—his mother would never leave him.

“Kid!” his mother yells. He knows it’s her without having to lay eyes on her. Relief slams into him so fast he isn’t ready. His knees buckle and land on the soft grass at the same time his butt hits his ankles, and he cries. He cries loud and hard until his throat burns and his stomach cramps.

His mother lands on her knees in front of him. He screams as his narrow arms are crushed within his mother’s grip—she’s never hurt him before. She gasps apologetically and rubs his arms. Her hands inspect him, checking and rechecking imagined wounds. She’s out of breath—she’s crying too.

“Oh, Kid…oh, God, thank God! I thought I’d lost you,” she says between sobs and messy kisses. Satisfied he isn’t hurt, she runs her fingers through his sweaty, blond hair, and then presses her nose to his scalp and inhales. She wipes tears from his crystal blue eyes and stares into them in the way only a mother can—like he’s the only thing that has ever mattered—like she’d die for him—like she’d kill.

Kid soaks in his mother’s love like a flower absorbs light, by turning toward it. He allows himself to cry within the cocoon of her embrace, because there are indeed some problems that can be solved by crying. He knows there will be consequences for running off, and yet it seems unimportant. His mother loves him, keeps him safe, and that’s all that matters.

“Don’t cry, baby,” she sings into his ear and rocks him.

“Don’t cry.”

DARK DUET: Platinum Edition Countdown - 24 October

Today is October 24th
until

While we're waiting...

And a throwback interview with
THE INDIE BOOKSHELF

The Dark Duet is a very intense series, possibly the most intense many of us at TIB have read.....were you, yourself, ever emotional while writing this story? MB

CJ: I was very emotional at times. You have to understand, I write these stories all alone in a room. There are times I laugh out loud and others that I cry. I’m very much in the moment when things are unfolding. And yes, sometimes I’m even bored to death as I’m writing, but I think all of it adds something to the storytelling.

How did you come up with the concept of Captive in the Dark? ST

CJ: It started one lonely night in Germany. I was sitting in my hotel room with nothing to do and no one to call and my mind began to wander. I’m a very anxious, slightly paranoid individual, so kidnapping and rape were first to come to mind. When that passed, I got bored and horny. So what’s a nerd to do on a Friday night if not dig out her laptop and start writing? LOL!

What kind of research did you have to do for these books, with this being such a sensitive topic? DS

CJ: I’m a people watcher, so a lot of the psychology comes from my voyeurism. Additionally, I spent time overseas where I witnessed some strange things. Nothing as horrible as what is in the book, but sad nonetheless. I also researched a lot of geography, cultural customs, military and government procedures, organizational charts, customs procedures, weaponry, small engine planes…you name it – at some point I researched it.

Was there any controversy over this book? If so, how did you handle it? ST

CJ: Yes and no. Some people have accused me of romanticizing rape or human trafficking, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. This is a story about human nature. It’s a story about our definitions of good and evil and what they truly mean. It’s about the birth of evil and the struggle each of us has with our own dark side. It’s about redemption and our quest for forgiveness.

Is it sick? Yes.
Is it funny? Yes.
Is it dirty? Yes.
Does it make you think? I hope so!

The truth is, a significant number of women (between 40-60%) have rape fantasies. Additionally, 20% have them frequently. I chose to explore this through my world of FICTION, while also providing a thought-provoking subtext AND a storyline worthy of my readers attention. I did not approach this lightly and I think ultimately, my readers understood what I tried to do.

To those who didn’t understand it or found it disgusting: That’s okay. Read something else. This is not a story for everyone.

I want to know what her extracurricular activities are, LOL! But seriously, when you aren't writing, what do you do for fun? JH

CJ: I’m a karaoke fanatic! I’m not internationally known – but I’ve been known to rock a microphone! (LOL!). Aside from that, I’m usually reading m/m romance, riding my Harley, catching up on TV Series, or spending time with my family. I don’t have much time for anything else. Though, whenever possible – I LOVE to travel.

Livvie is such a strong character, which I think is part of what makes these books so intriguing. If she were a "wet blanket", the spell you cast over your readers may have broken. How important do YOU feel Livvie's strength in character is for the book and where did your inspiration for her come from? LS

CJ: Honestly, Caleb and Livvie are both pieces of me. One of my favorite lines from ‘Captive in the Dark’ is: “It had always seemed to me as though I were split into two people, but not equally.”

This line represents me the most and I had it tattooed on my arm. Livvie is strong – even when she doesn’t want to be and it’s a huge part of who I am.

There have been times in my life that I have wanted to lie down and give up, but DAMN IT, I can’t do it. I am incapable of surrender. It’s just not in me to give up and so I will always fight – even when I don’t want to.

After finishing CITD, what were your thoughts and feelings on continuing the story? CS

I knew I had a lot more story to tell. However, given the fact that CitD and SitD are two very different books, I knew splitting the story was the right thing to do. Some people were pissed and thought I was dragging things out – but I think the real fans understand that wasn’t the case.

CitD is about CAPTIVITY! SitD is about SEDUCTION. They are two very different things and the characters in each are very different indeed.

How did you feel about the ending to Seduced in the Dark? ST

The ending took me WEEKS to write. I struggled so much with how to end things and to be honest, I wasn’t sure how it was going to end until my fingers kept typing and I let them go where they wanted.

I cried when it was over. I mourned them. I mourned the end of this journey. Still, I was happy it was over too. I was happy they arrived at the place they wanted to be and I felt blessed I could take them there.

Seduced in the Dark was so eloquently wrapped up with a very hopeful ending of redemption and forgiveness. As a writer, how difficult is it to tie in a sequence of dark events and plot lines that you know must eventually lead to a (somewhat) happy ending? NG

I never wanted to subscribe to the forgone conclusion of a ‘happy ending’. To be honest, I originally ended the book very differently. What changed my mind was the yearning I could hear in my heart. This may sound strange, but sometimes I think my characters are REAL. They talk to me. And Caleb just wouldn’t let me sleep until I gave him what he wanted.

You are writing a spin off series based on at least one of the characters from the series, will we see any other familiar faces, specifically one with red hair? LS

Ah yes! Agent Reed and Sloan will certainly be making an appearance again. I really loved these characters when they burst into my consciousness. I think Matthew will be my guide into a more mainstream audience. He’s every bit as tortured as my Caleb, but unlike my anti-hero, Matthew has used his pain to fuel his hero complex. It’s going to make for a very interesting character indeed.

Additionally, I love Agent Janice Sloan. A lot of others didn’t care for her in SitD, but to be honest – the sick puppy in me LOVES changing their minds. LOL! When she’s good, she great, but when she’s bad – she’s better. ;)

Do you read books in the genre that you write? ST

I actually don’t. Additionally, I’m not sure I fit into a genre, but if I were to guess, I would assume most put me in BDSM erotica which I don’t read too much of. It’s not that I don’t enjoy it, it’s that so much of the genre doesn’t include a meaty enough plot and it’s so wrapped up in ‘Safe, Sane, Consensual’ that it reads more like a how-to instead of fiction.

I want to be taken to THE EDGE! If I wanted to play it safe, I’d read a romance (and sometimes I do).

Most typically I read paranormal (romance or otherwise), sci-fi, or thrillers. My favorites are M/M books of any genre. There’s just something about the way two men are written together as equals that appeals to me. You don’t find a lot of ‘equality’ in straight romances.

Are you working on anything at the moment? If so, will you share with us? ST

Reed and Sloan! I hope to have it out next year (if I ever get to start it! L)

What town were you raised in and did it have any correlation to your writing? CS

North Hollywood, California. Yes and no – I am a product of my experiences.

Where is your favorite place to write? Do you work on your books during the day or wake frantic in the night having to put your thoughts into words immediately? AM

Whenever inspiration strikes! I try to write during the day at my computer downstairs, or at the library when my house is hectic, but if I wake up in the middle of the night with one hell of an idea – I run (not walk) to my laptop to write it down. Never wait!

What made you decide to buy a new motorcycle? NG

Most of my friends in the area are bikers, my hubby included so it was a natural progression of my interests. I LOVE my new Harley. I can’t wait to ride it to Sturgis next year. J
